I tried Alexander Technique after 20 years of painful lower back problems as I wanted to stop the cause of the pain, and learn how to manage my posture on business trips and long haul flights. I had family visiting from the USA and gave them an experience in London they might not have had back home.Nicholas Brandan gave me an Alexander technique lesson which changed my walking and sitting postures to support and strengthen my body. I thought a healthy body experience would be useful for my visiting two teenage nieces deeply into normal teenage preoccupation with clothes and style.
Nicholas came to my home and gave us Alexander technique lessons in my living room. The girls took to Nick straight away. Nick was fun and gave us direct advice, exercises and actions to take. We were in chairs, lying on the floor and walking around paying attention to our backs in a curious new way. He suggested we watch each other and learn from each other’s bad posture of lulling, slumping into chairs and generally doing bad things to curve and not support our spines.
Healthily texting was a revelation. Bring the phone up to our faces instead of curving our spines down to the phone.
Nick noticed one niece had quite pronounced scoliosis, a curve of the spine. Left unattended it can cause her bad back problems later in life. I never noticed this until he pointed it out. My sister has now started her with Alexander technique lessons back home.

I thought this was the opportunity to try the Alexander Technique. After some enquiries, I met Nicholas Brandon and began working with him and I’ve had wonderful results. I think my posture has improved, my general well-being has improved and my back pains have almost disappeared. Certainly I’ve had no recurrence of the neck problem. I had been suffering from back pain for 8 month and was going to the muscular-skeletal clinic in St Charles hospital for weekly treatment which involved seeing a Chiropractor. I was finding that after the treatment I was in pain for 2-3 days, which seemed to be aggravating my condition. I was beginning to lose hope and thought I would never resolve the pain I was in. I suffer from depression, so was on medication and becoming increasing depressed because of not being able to move, and do what I love doing which is gardening. A friend of mine recommended The Alexander Technique. I had just 8 sessions with Nicholas, which had a dramatic impact.
I found that I didn’t need to take the painkillers and I was able to walk properly and feel alive again. I found that it helped hugely with my mental health and anxiety, which was a major unexpected result. I am now no longer taking Amitriptyline which is very strong antidepressant.

My name is Chris and I am a professional landlord. I was recommended to Nick by my girlfriend as I had been experiencing lower back pain for quite some time and I was aware that my posture was not correct. On my first visit Nick took my photograph in profile and when he showed it to me a couple of weeks later having taken another of me after three visits the results were astounding: the first photo showed my head leaning forward and shoulders slumped, the second showed my back and neck straight and my shoulders raised, I looked and felt completely different and held that position naturally and without thinking about it.
The Alexander Technique is calming and relaxing and Nick explains the process very clearly. At times lying on the couch I wondered what benefits I was getting from such a gentle treatment but every time I stood up and walked away I felt like a different person and found it very easy to incorporate what I had learnt into my everyday life.
Now, having completed the course my posture and movement is completely different, my back pain has gone and my perception of myself and the world around me has changed and improved in so many ways that I was not expecting.

This observance should hold true for me in relation to Nicholas Brandon’s work at ‘Poised and Balanced’.
I have know Nicholas for over 30 years and never would have predicted I would be writing him a testimonial as a miraculous, spirit led, goal achieving, Alexander teacher.
The beginning of 2016 my brother suffered a stroke which left me emotional and physically devastated. The form of the physical devastation manifested in extreme tightness and pain in the lower back region. My once aggressive fertile body was reduced to a wrecked, murmuring state.
It was in desperation, having exhausted all other avenue and finances on chiropractors and Osteopaths, that I turned to Nicholas. Nicholas looked me in the eye and promised me that after 10 sessions there would be a marked improvement in my back and more importantly I’d have a new relationship with my spine and how I utilised my body.
Not only was Nicholas true to his promise, he forgot to mention he offered so much more; Nicholas is so gently reassuring, he is a master that delights in listening and paying focused attention to his clients.

I very much enjoyed having the opportunity to work with you, and I would be keen to continue with our sessions at some point in the future. In the meantime, I have continued to try and put into practice each day what we worked on. Always at the back of my mind is what you so neatly wrote below: “We spend most of our life running after things, doing things. We forget that being comes before doing.” So true! I have borne this in mind even while I have continued my search for a new job. After quite a gruelling process, including three rounds of interviews, I have been made an offer at a company, which I am very excited about. As you talked about, however, I am not going into this move thinking that “this new job is what I have been missing and will change everything”. I have been focusing more on the “being” even in my current role. However, this new role will certainly give me more time and space to do some of the things I enjoy doing, whether it’s socialising with friends, exercising, or even meditating/lying on my back!
Nick Brandon is a very experienced Alexander Technique teacher who has a weekly class in the West London Buddhist Centre studio. His sensitive and subtle awareness of the body, movement and posture is perfectly suited to developing awareness and kindness in meditation practice. Many of the centre team (who all have established meditation practices) have been attending Nick’s classes as we think he is a wonderful teacher and we have found his approach very helpful.
The main reason why I came to see Nicholas was really to do with the tension I was experiencing in my neck and body.
I read about the Alexander Technique before and the results it had for speakers and musicians and I thought I’d give it a try. I came to the trial lesson about a month ago which was very enlightening.
I think one of the problems of working on a computer every day is that your whole body really starts to lean forward; your neck posture starts to lean forward. Even though I tried quite a lot of postural enhancement classes, I think what it felt was that I was just pushing my neck backwards. I was in a state of tension upon tension and that wasn’t really helping.
I did one of Nick’s courses which has given me to tools to maintain the right poise but without forcing it. It’s good in terms of just the energy, the concentration, the awareness, the presence just because it’s a lot more natural in how everything is being done. That is something that I felt over the last few months that’s really changed me.
Nick is a good teacher. I think he’s patient, he doesn’t force it but at the same time, I think after the second or third lesson, you really start to get a hang of it. Maybe one thing I would caution is to not try to rush into it because that’s the way I normally approach things but to really work a bit slowly and work a bit deeply. I think that really compliments the lessons.

In a series of 10 hourly sessions once a week, Nick very effectively and efficiently taught the basics of the Alexander Technique to me.
